Encore un collector exceptionnel. Le LP est paru en 1967 et le dos de la pochette, avec sa remarquable coquille (« Phycotic reaction » !) présente un groupe qui fait parler de lui à San Francisco, mais encore inconnu. Bien plutôt, il s’agirait d’une réunion de musiciens dont les compétences étaient reconnues. Le bruit court que Sky Saxon et Kim Fowley font partie du groupe Fire escape, ce qui est rendu vraisemblable par plusieurs facteurs, surtout en ce qui concerne le leader des Seeds. L’album 10 titres de Fire escape reprend le classique The Trip de Kim Fowley et deux titres des Seeds signés (Saxon/Hooper) : Trip maker (ou tripmaker) et Pictures and designs. Les deux uniques compositions originales sont mises à l’actif des deux producteurs eux-mêmes : l’instrumental Blood beat et Journey’s end, deux titres plus psychédéliques. En soutien aux reprises de Kim Fowley et des Seeds, l’album est dominé par les reprises qu’aujourd’hui on ne peut manquer de qualifier de garage, pas moins que Talk talk des Music Machine, 96 tears de Question mark and the mysterians (ou ? and the Mysterians), Fortune teller de Benny Spellman que les Who et les Rolling stones ne créditent pas comme ici d’un certain Frey, et bien sûr le titre qui donne son nom à l’album : Psychotic reaction des Count Five. Love special delivery est signé (Garcia/Espinoza). J’ai oublié de qui c’était. Le disque est sorti sur GNP Crescendo comme pour les albums des Seeds. De là à affirmer que le chanteur des Seeds fait partie avec le déjà célèbre producteur Kim Fowley, il y a un pas qu’on peut hésiter à franchir. Pour ne pas sous-exploiter le format, le CD est allongé d’un album live officiel des Seeds, Raw and alive Live at Merlin’ music box que j’ai ailleurs en CD avec mes albums des Seeds. En tout cas, l’ensemble des dix titres forme un tout très bon et on peut s’ingénier à comparer la musique de Fire escape et celle live des Seeds sur la réédition CD qui propose bien « two LP’s on one CD ».
Il ne me reste qu’à citer le texte promotionnel de Don Doughty qui fait partie intégrante de la valeur mythique du produit et qui est tout ce que nous laisse le livret CD ; le mystère ne sera pas levé :
San Francisco, a far-out city ; The Fire Escape, a far-out group ; a natural for each other. When producers Hank Levine and Larry Goldberg visited San Francsico recently, every place they went the big talk was « Have you heard The Fire Escape ? » Their first step was to find the Fire Escape… they were playing in an obscure nightclub 10 miles out of town called The Gutter. The next step was to find The Gutter – the place was so far « in » the « in-kids » didn’t know where it was. But with patience, diligence and a cab fare of $51.72, The Gutter was finally located in an old building that used to be a speakeasy in the 20’s. As they knocked on the door, a little window slid open and an eerie green light emanated. Throbbing in the distance they could hear the weird sounds of a far-out sounding group. As Larry & Hank identified themselves as record producers and assured the guard thaht they would never reveal the location of The Gutter to anyone, they were admitted. Slowly the door creaked open and they walked down two flights of steps, then up one flight of steps, turned the corridor, walked back down two flights of steps to another door, and opened it to find themselves back on the street next to a door that said « This is The Gutter ». They opened the door and The Fire Escape was sitting around ‘taking five’ surrounded by dozens of admirers. Larry & Hank talked with them for a while and found they had many friends in common. After a few moments of conversation, it was time for them to do another set and they got up on the stand and played sounds, the likes of Larry & Hank had never heard before and are sharing with you in this album. They’re great – they’re new – they’re different – they’re The Fire Escape.
A l’évidence, Larry & Hank étaient deux frappés du casque, and money-go-round. Le contenu vaut toutefois mieux que cette arnaque bon enfant.
